Picture of the Day: Reds in F16s

By John

Nice refueling shot of one of the Air Force's aggressor aircraft. Check out the pilot's helmet. Apparently these guys have clung to the old red star, hammer, and sickle of the Soviet Union. Nice, comrade. I'm all about the Cold War throwbacks.

An F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 64th Aggressor Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., approaches the boom on a KC-135 Stratotanker to refuel Oct. 19 during Red Flag 07-1. Red Flag tests aircrew warfighting skills in realistic combat situations. The aircraft fly missions at the nearby Nevada Test and Training Range where they simulate an air war.

that is one hell of a shot. question: are aggressor F16s Vipers or Fighting Falcons?

Bingo Charlie   ·  October 24, 2006 05:39 AM

eh, good question BC. I honestly have no idea.

They make flight turbins with cresents?

Jim   ·  October 24, 2006 10:45 AM

Jim, your comment is something I would think the AF must take seriously: With virtually no enemies (outside China) that we must prepare for, just how do you continue to justify the huge budgets necessary to keep these Aggressors and the rest of the AF aflight?

azlibertarian   ·  October 24, 2006 11:13 AM

well it's just one squadron of 16s AZ, and we're getting plenty of bang for our buck.

Nice picture, as usual.

I have no problem with our military doing the training they need to ensure our continued air dominance in whatever theater may come in the future. That said, I do ocasionaly wonder at our cost per plane these days as compared to WWII, as well as the resulting numbers of planes.

Another Opinion   ·  October 24, 2006 11:54 AM

Ah yes, the good ole days - where we had one enemy (okay maybe three or four) who was as afraid to get blown to bits as we were.

Is it wrong to miss the Cold War?

BTW, I was right near the wall when it came down - those were the days.

Another opinion,

There are currently much fewer planes than we had in WW2. And they cost more. But compare the bombloads and you'll see why that's okay.
