"Enough of the Politics"
By Lt Col P
In today's Washington Post, a very moving article about the life and death of a Marine from Bethesda, Maryland. He is the only serviceman from that city killed in Iraq or Afghanistan.
A quote from the fourth page struck me: " 'Enough of the politics,' Alex e-mailed [his mother] from Iraq."
Enough, indeed. Godspeed, Sgt Carbonaro.

This makes me VERY angry.
What is with these sanctimonious mothers who cluelessly undermine the confidence and focus of their own sons in harm's way?
How can you do this to your own child -- show him his own mother does not morally or politically support his decision to undertake a dangerous but critical job -- and take it to the extreme of excessive and PUBLIC political action? How embarrassing for her Marine son.
Didn't she think this might have some adverse effect on his focus or strength as he conducted the risky missions she disagreed so strongly with? Maybe start self-doubt creeping in as his eyes searched for IEDs as he drove down an Iraqi highway?
What kind of a mother is this? Keep your mouth shut until your son is out of harm's way. After that, you can debate the politics til you're blue in the face.
God bless the Recon Marines.

at least she does not use his name to further her own agenda; she has been keeping a low profile (as requested by her late son) and even in this Post article, she did not call for 'cut and run' or call the President a criminal... Although, it did irk me when I read that she sent him all that anti-war crap to Iraq... Modern day parents seems to be ok with their children's decision to blow a genetic laboratory and such but cannot come to grips with their children's decision to protect the country...
I grew up in Bethesda. I am not surprised by the story. When growing up I discovered that any kid with patriotic tendencies was labelled a "square". No one admits to voting Republican - the area is too "multicultural" for that. Kids are expected to follow in the footsteps of their parents and choose a career path that promises lots of money and/or access to political power. College counselors never mentioned military academies. I doubt any kid from Bethesda would ever discuss patriotic feelings with his parents or even his friends.
Nevertheless, there are kids out there who can figure out the moral bankruptcy of doing nothing. The recruitment office used to be around the corner from the neighborhood comic book store. Not a bad location for recruiting future heroes.
