Question of the Day: Hollywoodistan?

By John

With the swirl of controversy surrounding The Path to 9/11, today's question of the day is:

Can patriotic, guy kills the terrorist & gets the girl films still survive in Hollywood?

Take into account that terrorists/terrorism wasn't mentioned once in World Trade Center....

Hollywood has lost its way. I remember the days when they would actually contribute to war efforts and that was a long long time ago.

I hope that tinsel town comes back to and makes movies that we want to see but I am not betting on it.

two words cowboy: Team America

I suspect that Hollywood will make whatever films that continue to make them money.

Harrison   ·  September 7, 2006 07:06 AM

Yes, they can survive. They can take the route Mel Gibson took to get his film "Passion of Christ" made and distributed without "official" Hollywood sanction. I have great hopes for the recent influx of Redskins owner Dan Snyder and his checkbook into the movie biz. This could be another outlet for sane, patriotic movies in the tradition of "Sands of Iwo Jima", "Sargeant York", "Band of Brothers", et. al.

I think audience response to these kinds of films would be stunning, as it was with the Gibson film. You talk about making money!

I do not share Jordan's optimism. I do agree with Greyston however, Hollywood has most definitely lost its way.

Has there been one film that identified Islamofascists as our enemy in the global war on terror? They even changed Tom Clancy's Sum of all Fears to make the terrorists neo-nazis instead of Muslims.

WTC was pretty good. let's not forget we were soldiers, band of brothers, etc. Hollywood is capable of decent films, but I think that it would be a fair assessment to say it is more difficult to get anti-patriotic films made than patriotic films.

How can you expect Hollywood to glorify a failed war? Repugnicans already manipulate radio, cable news, and the internet. I can see that you all will not be happy until you have Hollywood too.

SJ   ·  September 7, 2006 08:02 AM

Cool it SJ. There isn't a Republican conspiracy under every rock and news story that you read. And I do not believe that anyone mentioned anything about films glorifying Gulf War II. Don't drink the bongwater man.

I'm optimistic because Hollywood is ultimately ruled by money. Box office stats especially over the summer were pathetic. Fewer and fewer people are bothering to go to the theater, and they demand a strong draw to go there. The "Passion" made a tremendous profit, though I don't know how it compared to other films released at the same time.

There are so many stories to tell about this war - people like Paul Smith and Sgt. Kasals, the battles, the central personalities, the controversies, the unprecedented rise of the milblogs taking on the Ernie Pyle role. You couldn't get better subject matter.

Hollywood doesn't get it. People WANT to see these stories, and they want to hear about these people. But in their current state of dysfunction, they can't or won't take up the challenge.

jordan   ·  September 7, 2006 08:40 AM

heh, and you say you're optimistic Jordan?

John   ·  September 7, 2006 09:32 AM

No, that's why they would have to take the "Passion" route and go around Hollywood. Hollywood wouldn't do it.

Just based on the manner in which Bubba and all his cronies are screaming at the moment I'm beginning to believe that not only might I actually like this film, but it must also be fairly realistic.

I think a patriotic project will work, look at Fox's "24", Showtime's "Sleeper Cell", TNT's "The Grid" and BBC's "Spooks/MI-5". Its less a matter of whether the hero can be patriotic, than can the hero work for honorable masters. Plenty of projects have a patriotic hero, but in most the protagonist has to work against both the terrorists and his own corrupt government. Hollywood calls it nuance, even granddaddy of rightwing fiction Tom Clancy has gone to that well. Personally, I think its just lazy writing. If your looking for ra-ra America movies you are pretty much stuck with Team America and Flight 93.

Then there's always films like Carl Miller's Retaliation (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0842022/)

Mike   ·  September 7, 2006 02:40 PM

Let's not forget "Executive Decision". Hell, the only thing unpatriotic about that movie was Steven Seagal's early death.

If they had gotten Chuck Norris to play that role...
