Cue Blue Oyster Cult

Don’t fear the Reaper!

9/14/2006 – WASHINGTON (AFPN) — The Air Force chief of staff announced “Reaper” has been chosen as the name for the MQ-9 unmanned aerial vehicle.

The Air Force is the Department of Defense’s executive agent for designating and naming military aerospace vehicles. In the case of the Reaper, Gen. T. Michael Moseley made the final decision after an extensive nomination and review process, coordinated with the other services. “The name Reaper is one of the suggestions that came from our Airmen in the field. It’s fitting as it captures the lethal nature of this new weapon system,” General Moseley said.

Heh, he’s right. For all the armaments the Reaper carries, it needs more cowbell.

This weapon comes with its own theme song, by Blue Oyster Cult.

  2. Looks like an uprated Predator. Other than an apparently larger number of hardpoints, what’s different?

  3. William Scharf says:

Well, wouldn’t a larger number of hardpoints be a rather significant improvement? Predators dont’ carry more than a hellfire. What’s the ordance strapped on underneath the reaper in this pic? Not a hellfire, is it?

  4. John says:

Murdoc’s pic looks like an unmanned A-10, yikes!

  5. Allen says:

Was wondering, do you think the ACLU would object to using them (Well, maybe a downgraded JDAM)for high speed pursuits. I’d make great PR, and the cost of prosecution, incarceration, Etc., would more than pay for itself, methinks. AND, no repeat offenders!!!

  6. william Scharf says:

Hellfire’ll do a car real nicely.

  7. John says:

    lol! Great SNL tie-in.

Jihad’s got a fever, and the only perscription is…

    More cowbell, baby!

  9. Roachman says:

I really got a chuckle oout of the pic, probably because I’m sitting here in a “More cowbell” t-shirt.

I’ll start using Mike S. since there there is another Mike (the first two replies). I’m glad you see the humor. I just hope my imageshack account does not get annihilated; I use it in a lot of other places like hobbist and technical forums.
