The Inability to Fight
By John
Sometimes it feels like the pro-victory camp is constantly on the defensive. That's why it was so nice to hear Secretary Rumsfeld call a spade a spade today in Reno, NV.
Rumsfeld: Bush Foes Lack Courage in War on Terror -
Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Tuesday accused critics of the Bush administration's Iraq and counterterrorism policies of lacking the courage to fight terror. In unusually explicit terms, Rumsfeld portrayed the administration's critics as suffering from "moral and intellectual confusion" about what threatens the nation's security. Addressing several thousand veterans at the American Legion's national convention, Rumsfeld recited what he called the lessons of history, including the failed efforts to appease the Adolf Hitler regime in the 1930s."I recount this history because once again we face the same kind of challenges in efforts to confront the rising threat of a new type of fascism" he said.
And I don't believe in coincidences, Secretary Rumsfeld's speech writers obviously read Blackfive....or at least the Wall Street Journal. Take this CNN quote:
[Rumsfeld] said, for example, that more media attention was given to U.S. soldiers' abuse of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib than to the fact that Sgt. 1st Class Paul Ray Smith received the Medal of Honor.
Versus Blackfive in a Wall Street Journal piece from earlier this month:
"Does Abu Ghraib need to be told 40 times above the fold in the New York Times when half your readers couldn't name the guy who won the Medal of Honor?"
Naturally, pro-defeat blogs like Think Progress are having a cow over Mr. Rumsfeld's comments:
Yesterday, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld gave a speech in Reno, Nevada to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rumsfeld could have taken the opportunity to address the critical challenges of the war in Iraq: the security situation in Baghdad, mounting U.S. military and Iraqi civilian casualties and out-of-control costs.Instead, he took the opportunity to repeatedly attack — implicitly and explicitly — anyone who dares to criticize the administration’s “stay the course” policy.
Yes, how dare the SECDEF defend the troops and their mission! You know, I understand that blogs which specialize in high brow whine fests will get their collective panties in a bunch when high level officials expose them as wusses, but do they honestly expect the military leadership to adopt defeatist talking points in front of the VFW?
Blogs like Think Progress have made a career out of trashing the SECDEF and the rest of the President's defense team, during a time of war no less. Forgive me if I find it satisfying when they are given a taste of their own medicine.

An opinion in today's WaPo headlined its report of the speech as "Rumsfeld Declares War, On America" and then proceeded to opine that the most logical explanation is that Rumsfeld is insane.
Ummm....yeah.
I don’t like the reality that the US population pretty much things in tag lines and one liners but it is reality. Knowing this I have long been looking for a short one liner that can sum up our war that could be hammered like the “oil for blood” BS or “Bush Lied people died” crap.
Here is what I propose:
When explaining the war answering how long or this or that complaint about it not going all easy hit with “we have three options in this war 1) Fight 2) Die 3) Convert to Islam” that last part can be backed with the recent Fox journalist release.
The other one-liner is somewhat a name change. Instead of describing this war the “long war” I would suggest “war of survival” this instead of concentrating on the sacrifice which most normal people understand are needed in war it concentrates on the Necessity of war (hence sacrifices are a after thought).
The perception of this war must be changed. Bush by not constantly rallying the people since 9-11 has allowed the complacency to return the LLL’s constant “not necessary” and concentration on the sacrifices has made people question. You don’t question if you should fight, die, or convert that is simple and all choices after that are simple. We need this war seen as a war of survival again. That is why right after 9-11 we were hardened ready to do whatever and why in WW2 we were solid because otherwise we were dead, or Nazi converts.
Let the LLL’s try to explain to the Americans that our enemy doesn’t want to conquer the world. Don’t want to kill or convert all infidels. Let the LLL’s explain why Death or Conversion maybe a better option than Fighting even with the worst case scenario sacrifices.
Some good old calling Sedition Sedition would be great too. And ohhh yeah most definatley question their patriotism.
Finally, the admin is fighting back. I saw even Cheney jumped in. This is great. They need to do this more, more, and more. Every single day they should be doing this. You know it's working too when it agitates the MSM. These propagandists on the left need to be called out, and more of it should be done.
I have to disagree with Seg on this one. This long-war will require the support of the majority of the American people. The administration needs at least some democratic support for this war. Some of the rhetoric the administration has used has been counter-productive in my opinion. It doesn't covert the opposition or those sitting on the fence to your point of view. The administration needs to use the language of Roosevelt, Lincoln and other great wartime presidents to engage the silent majority of Americans. Right now, it seems like that majority is siding with the anti-war left thanks in no small part to the ammunition the administration has given them with some of the stupid things they've said and done.
The opposition to this war cannot be soley traced to Democratic wingbats. The administration is to blame for a series of saying really stupd things that gave the opposition ammunition. They're information/press relations plan has been abysmal. They keep talking about the long-war, and I agree with them, but they are helping to ensure that Americans will lose patience before the objective can be completed.
I think people should realize that divisive language will not change minds. If it's not already too-late, the administration needs to start taking the high road.
This administration has allowed the media to define the War on Terror, a reckless and dangerous thing to do. In the past, when things have reached a low point, they come out swinging, but have never demonstrated staying power. I hope things are different this time. It's shameful that the Bush administration has failed so miserably on the PR/information front.
While I support the Bush administration, I am highly disappointed in their refusal to fight the information war, and their willingness to cede that terrority to the mainstream media. Milbloggers fight each and every day. We defend OIF, we point out how important it is to the larger War on Terror, we point out the progress on the ground. But... we don't own the largest bully pulpit in the world. Someone else does, and he's not using it to make a difference. The past two or so years have been one large, costly missed opportunity.
I wonder if it's too late to reverse public opinion? I hope not...
I agree with Andi. It's so predictable when the propagandists come out and start spraying to the American public. They are like an unwanted cat in a house marking their territory.
This being an election year and ever so closer to the elections, the propaganda spray is at at all time high.
The information war is where it is at. Every single day of the year these speeches should be done combating this propaganda, not just reacting to it...
The MSM gives only one side of the story for the most part. That story is the left wing propagandist story. And let's face it, non-bloggers, apolitical, non-news junkies/people who really don't follow the news or are interested in it, just watch the MSM and get only one side of the story.
So the President has to and should go out on the offensive about the things are being said about the Iraq war and the war on terror. He should go on the offensive about the people who are saying it. He should force the media to pay attention to the debate on both sides, not just one side. Then let the people decide.
So it was Rummy and Cheney this week. Bush will start next week. I'm glad they are doing it and I hope they hit them hard and not quiet down again like they usually do. Offense, Offense, and more Offense. Those who love the kool aid are already cringing and it's great, so keep it up.
- the other option would be for everyone to walk off the job and say, " f*** you, let the cops and prosecutors keep you safe from terrorists all over the world, you obviously don't want us to do what we are trained for and you don't hold terrorists accountable for their actions and since many of you refuse to believe in the threat they pose, you obviously don't need us around anymore". Yup, rifles thrown down with a notice of termination of services taped to the stock would make the headlines. What would they do? Lock up whole divisions and squadrons - impound your tanks and choppers and jets? Can't you just see the headlines? "101st Airborne Div. tells Liberals to get f**ked, walks off the job" or
"1st Mar. Div. flashes asses at Berkely, disperses to their homes" or "entire Stealth squadron refuses to fly, citing excessive contmept from Liberals" or "Joint Chiefs walk out, concede multiculturalism takes priority over defense" or "Sailors beach carrier in protest over being called baby killers". The bottom line is if the military acted like liberals, we would all be dead in short order.
I'm thrilled to bits if Secy Rumsfeld's speech writers are gathering ammo from some of our best bloggers. There have been times when I felt constrained to send some of them to the President myself. We aren't making much progress just agreeing among ourselves on blogs like this one. We need a strategy for getting the truth out in America. It's almost like we have to fight house to house, person to person, to defeat the horrid defeatest lies that so many receive straight into their brains from the MSM. There has to be a better way of combatting terror/defeatism/anti-Americanism than what we are presently doing. I'm open to some military-minded direction.
All of you milbloggers are doing our nation a tremendous service!
B5 and all the rest of you should be proud. I would bet a week's wages there are a bunch of folks in the Pentagon that read you.
Maybe a good PR strategy would be to have a liason for milbloggers. There are even more great stories waiting to be told.
Don't hold you breath for the Benedict Arnold media to print them.
Keep up the good work!
And what is it you are wanting our President to say? And how is it that you want this White House to get out the message we all want? How is this White House to get pass the current press corp?
President Bush today, said the same things he's being saying for a year. Yet, it's not reported as he says it. The White House puts out the speech, the reporters change the words.
If you haven't seen this side-by-side display of Rumsfeld speech and the article written by an AP story at http://www.qando.net/details.aspx?Entry=4496, go check it out.
Which version of Rumsfeld speech made it to my local paper? Not Rummy's, but this AP reporter's.
So tell me... and I agree with each of you, Bush has a message that has to be spoken, but I challenge you to offer some other avenue to get his message out, rather than bitching that it isn't happening. It's happening. He does it daily. Read reports like from Powerline as being in a personal session with him, follow his schedule, he is speaking each day, and his message hasn't and isn't changing.
So, other than disseminating his speeches through the MSM, how is it to be done?
Sorry, my extended family is gonna watch the nightly news, they read the newspaper, they ain't gonna go online to WhiteHouse.Gov or C-Span, to read or listen to what he is saying.
Just how does this administration bypass the MSM? Bush has his words, they just don't get repeated as he has spoken them, unless he does a speech using "Texas English" rather than "Washington English."
