The Same War

Throughout Israel's short existence, America has stood on the sidelines of the Jewish-Arab conflict.
But that was during the days of the Cold War, when the Russian juggernaut used its Arab allies to maintain influence in the region. The Israel-Arab conflict, from the Sinai in '56 to the first Intafada, were proxy wars, with Jews and Arabs playing out the role of pawns in the global chessmatch between the Eagle and the Bear.
But when the wall fell, the Islamists rose. New York, Saudi, Bali, Chechenya, London, Madrid; the war that Israel fought for decades has become global.
Does anyone disagree that we are fighting the same war as the Israelis, against the same enemy?
We stand as democracies, they as terrorists. Perhaps it is time that we treat the proxy war as history, the Syrians and Iranians as enemies, and Israel as a real ally.

God bless Israelis, they have been fighting our war for a long time, and it is time for us to finally get into the fight, an act that most likely will finish this war off rather quicker...

How many Arabs does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they sit in the dark and blame it on the Jews.
I do not agree that we should involve ourselves in this war. I am behind Israel but I feel that we are overextended in other places in the world. And North Korea scares me.

I am truely amazed at how much patience the Jewish people have had during the past few years.It is obvious that the Arabs are being overcome by their emotions and have forgotten recent history.I guess they just like being whupped from time to time.Here we go again.....

I couldn't agree more John. The United States has no better friend in the world than Israel. In 1991, when violently, and without provocation, Israel was repeatedly attacked with Scud missiles by Iraq, Israel at the request of the U.S. restrained themselves and did not respond. It is easy to forget at what domestic political risk that put the sitting government of Israel at the time. Still they stood by, and allowed the US and the coalition assembled at the time to deal with Iraq.
Looking back through history, I cannot think of a single time in its entire existence that Israel has condemned the U.S. for anything. While other so-called friends have publicly denounced us, and privately tried to undermine us, Israel has been steadfast in its support of, and friendship to the United States. It is true that we provide them with a tremendous amount of financial and military aid, but we do the same for others who have no qualms about taking our money with one hand, and striking us with the other.
Frankly I think President Bush's declaration that Israel has the right to defend herself is not nearly strong enough, and was made primarily for the sake of consistency with his own policies which led to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. I don't disagree with those policies, but I am beginning to have a problem with what appears to be a progressively less enthusiastic implementation and execution of those policies.
I would like to see one high-level administration official say:
"Not only does the United States fully support Israel’s right to defend herself, but we absolutely endorse their policy of confronting and eliminating the terrorists that threaten her very existence."
How very sad we can't even endorse a country who is actually acting out the policy we espouse.
I am not a student of these types of things, but I believe there was a man from that part of the world who said something like, "A greater love have no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Today there are Israeli men and women dying not just for their own survival, but ours too. Make no mistake about it, Israel is our friend, and we have precious few good ones around the world.
The time draws near to face the facts. Peace is achieved through the defeat of it's enemies, not through appeasing them. Failure to recognize and act upon that simple fact is done at our own peril, and will ultimately result in our demise.
To the people and especially the fighting men and women of Israel: Continue to hold the courage of your convictions. It takes us a while most of the time, but when push comes to shove, I have faith that the U.S. will stand shoulder to shoulder with you; our brothers in freedom and light. God bless.
As much as i would hate to see more American soldier die, its time to take down the crazy bastards who want war, i say give them TOLD WAR, which we are not doing now. I like to call it the WWII option, no more pussy footing around, bomb the cities, bomb the military bases, its called bomb everything, not pretty but affective. I think after 6 to 8 months of that, they will sue for peace as saddum insane did after "91" war. Get it politicians, stop making money of the war and get it over, win this thing.
We could wipe these loonies of the earth, why are we not doing it, who is holding back the "dogs of war" and why. Its time to end this, i'm tired of these yuckers making money off of war and i'm tired of the insane shits in the middle east, kill all of them if we have to. Thats my dam opinion.

I agree on the theoretical side - the US and Israel are very good friends, and have a common enemy that both want dealt with. However, to treat Syria and Iran as real enemies any more than we do now would basically require open war. Not that the US wouldn't win an open war(ha!), but we'd basically be taking Iraq and multiplying it by three. Even if the military side of that was fesable(possible, but I wouldn't bet on it), the political angle is completely and totally untenable. I doubt that the resolutions would even pass the current Congress - fighting the war properly is great and all, but it'd be political suicide for a huge portion of those who voted for it.
Sadly, the only way to do this is one nation at a time, spending several years on each. Iraq now, then Iran(with the odd Osirak-style attack thrown in, hopefully), then Syria. I wish the fast way could work, but it can't.

First, we have to actually fight the war, not smimply make it appear we are fighting. "We", as in U.S., Israel, Britain, etc. whomever our "true" Allies are.
Second, we have to actually kill people. Right now we are so afraid of killing someone and getting bad media coverage that we would almost prefer to see our own people dying over that of our enemy's.
The question stands, "Do we have the will to win?"

You focus on an important point, Sarah.
First, they are bringing the war to us. It is not us instigating the war on them. The national SnewsZ generally wish for us to believe otherwise.
Second, whether or not we like involving ourselves in these wars, it is not us involving ourselves but them involving us by attacking us.
Yes, they are attacking us. We are simply "choosing" to fight back on their home territory rather than fighting them on our home territory.
Lastly, yes, N.Korea is scary. But it truly is a regional problem. Whereas the terrorist conflicts are a global problem. If we ever fight N.Korea it will be bloody, but it will also be over rather quickly.
N. Korea is isolated and can not win any type of protracted conflict without direct aid from Russia and China, and from our own national left-leaning media. And Russia, China won't fight us openly right now because we would destroy their infrastructure and economic base that supports their militiaries in a protracted conflict.
They know, all of them, that the U.S. can defeat them... "if" we have the will to fight to the end.
So, the question stands, "Do we have the will to win?"

I was part of a NATO/Partnership for Peace/Mediteranean Dialogue excercise last year in Macedonia and worked with a number of IDF officers. I made the same point to them.
