HAIFA USO Update

By Maj P

Here's an update my post on The Mother Of The Sixth Fleet. I called the USO to see if they had any news from Haifa. The very nice lady who returned my call told me that they closed that location a few years ago, needing to shift resources to other places with the rise of wartime ops. I can understand that, but it's sad to see.

However, I do hope Gilla is OK. If anyone knows or knows of any bloggers from Haifa, ask them if they know her. She's a fairly prominent citizen.

(Many thanks to all who put in comments. Matt at Blackfive also linked to it.)

I remember getting invited to Gilla's house to celebrate passover. I think it was in 1996. Being on liberty in Haifa during passover is a little bit of a bummer, because the whole place is shut down, but in all my time in the Navy, she offered us what was one of the best cultural experiences I ever had. Not too many southern christian hicks like me ever get to eat a traditional jewish passover meal. Haifa was the first liberty port I ever visited and the most frequent. I hope she is well and am sad to hear that the USO is closed. Thanks OPFOR, for reminding me of all Gilla and the wonderful people in Haifa shared with me so long ago.

Nerf: I'm going to write the Israeli embassy and see if they can tell me anything. Yeah, it's a long shot but all they can do is tell me no. She is something else, as you well know.

I remember Gilla Gerzon (not sure if that is how you spell her last name) she has been a friend of the fleet for many years - I have been to Haifa many times with a few ships and I hope all is well with her and her family with todays conflict.

I met Gilla several years back. I kept up with her for a good time, but moved, changed commands, you know the story. I've exhausted every link I had to her. If there is someone out there who knows how to get in touch with her, please pass it on.

Gilla is alive and well. I just spoke to her. Normally she can be reached by email at:
gilla@netvision.net.il, but her computer crashed and she is without a convenient internet connection for now. Please send her your messages and wishes for a Happy New Year. (The Jewish New Year begins at sundown tomorrow evening).

I was able to get a message to Gilla in August 2006. She called the ship, but I don't have the number to ring her. If someone could forward this to her, I would appreciate it.

Has there been any further word on Gila's whereabouts over the past 2 years? I've been trying to track her down since a visit to the Haifa USO back in late 1998, but once the office closed I lose track of a good point of contact. If anyone has a good listing, PLEASE forward it to me (shmoo_usn@yahoo.com)

Thanks!
