Snap, Crackle, Pop! An OPFOR Podcast
By Charlie
Hey folks. John and I have finished another podcast, about the current situation between the Israelis and the Palestinians.
John and I have disagreed in the past over the nature of Israeli/Palestinian engagement, and I think we actually arrive at a consensus during our discussion.
Moving on, John and I are trying to sync our schedules to put up a weekly podcast. Our largest barrier is technology. So, as usual, we need to reach out to the audience for help.
How can we fix our podcasts, get rid of the pops, and improve our sound quality?

What type of computer are you using to record these? Mac? Windows? Laptop? Desktop?
It almost sounds like your hard disk does not have DMA enabled. You might want to check. I think you're getting some mic/amp hum too but that's less of an issue than the clicks and pops.
If you do have DMA enabled I'd try a different piece of software to record. If you let me know what platform you're on perhaps I can recommand one.
Actually as I listen to it, I realize it could well be your microphone at fault. It sounds like it's not hooked up to ground properly. Have you tried a different one? (The fact there are not only clicks, but also lots of hiss, is what makes me think that).
Great content by the way. I do hope you can clean up the audio a bit :)
I have no technologial tips, however I will say this. WE want more singing.
This sounds very much like microphone problems, or quite possibly a bad cable.
I'd suggest starting with the microphone, record to tape or something, and see if it works. Then add one component back in at a time until the problem starts to occur again.
Why is ArmyWife always asking for more singing in podcasts?
The pops are a combination of poor microphone, poor sound card, and background noise.
Ideally, you need a soundproof room with a professional microphone which runs into a ProTools system. Then again, with military pay that's not going to happen.
1. Get a better microphone, a gaming headset could work well if there's only one narrator.
2. Get a better soundcard. I have a pcmcia Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS for my laptop, I wouldn't go for anything less capable. The new Sound">http://www.soundblaster.com/products/product.asp?category=1&subcategory=208&product=14066">Sound Blaster X-Fi looks terrific.
2. Buy some cheap foamies from Guitar Center or mattress pads from Walmart to put up around the room, if there's more than one person. Foam absorbs sound, most court rooms use this concept to get rid of the little noises that bother. Put them in the corners and anywhere else that sound reflect well off of (like metal)
That didn't work so well. Link.
On second thought, those pops are nearly all hardware related. What kind of sound card are you using?

I think we actually arrive at a consensus during our discussion.
Try blowing his office up and throwing him in jail. It even works when you're trying to arrive at a consensus with Hamas!
