Picture of the Day: Northern Edge

Continuing our theme of random military hardware juxtaposed against equally random nature scenes….

F16s.JPG

U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft perform maneuvers over Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, June 14, 2006, during exercise Northern Edge 2006. The joint exercise is one of a series of U.S. Pacific Command exercises that prepare joint forces to respond to crises in the Asian Pacific region. The aircraft are from 112th Fighter Squadron, Ohio Air National Guard.

Emphasis mine. Just sayin’…

Can you imagine what the CHINESE generals are undoubtedly whispering to each other right about now?

    Heh.

Cool shot, I would hate to have to punch out over that terrain, though.

I love these photos you’re publishing of US air power. Keep it up! I find it very encouraging and email them to faint-hearted friends.

When my 6 yr old grandson asked me who will protect us in war, I send him another one of your great photos. And I smile, because when I was a 3rd grader, many years ago during the Cold War, I asked a teacher what would protect us from the ‘Bomb.’ He wisely told me that US pilots fly constantly toward the border of our then enemy, ready to strike at a moments notice. ‘Those pilots protect you,’ he said, ‘even while you are sleeping.’ I have never forgotten that lesson. It’s still true today.

Great pic, too! I wanted to see the detail on the fin-flash, that bird obviously being the Wing Commander’s aircraft…

It was the politicians that kept you safe. The cold war USAF/SAC seemed to be dead set on a hot war – lucky the politicians keep “Bombs Away LeMay” and his ilk on a short leash. Scary but true.
