Number One, on the other hand, can get all tied down in apparent attempts at defenses that can only be described as paranoia.
This old brain has forgotten the name of the Italian writer who laid down the basic rule that states that “you cannot fight a religion”. Because a religion is a thing and you cannot fight a thing. You can, however, fight people.
Personally I’m convinced that the present administration knows this full well and it is the fundamental policy behind something that has enraged many conservatives: Our current POTUS rightfully refuses to declare war on a religion.
As for the left, they are constantly hoping that we would take up such folly. They constantly accuse us of it even without any sign of evidence.
We must fight the people in this War on Terror and victory can only be measured when those people are beaten bad enough to begin questioning their own actions in no uncertain terms, or are annihilated. Which is the basic response required in any war. See Churchill, Truman et al, “Unconditional Surrender”.
