Memorial Day Memo

By John

Chris Michel, president of Military.com, on taking back Memorial Day:

This morning I opened the paper and a series of circulars spilled onto my lap – bright, colored pages with bold fonts and frenetic language: “Now through Memorial Day only!” and “A Don’t Miss Memorial Day Sales Event!” As I took a deep breath and gathered up the pages that had spilled to the floor, at once it struck me: We owe more than commerce to those who sacrificed the balance of their lives for their country. It's time to take back Memorial Day.

Read the whole thing.

John,

You've got this dead-on right: holidays need to be taken back for their original purposes.

I have to admit that I myself did consider Memorial Day as an opportunity to find a 'nice deal' on a car for my wife - she's starting her own insurance agency and needs a nice car to give her the proper image for her policy holders.

However - I was snapped back when I remembered that for the last three years that I keep trying to remember to find a Memorial Day parade in my neighborhood and take the family.....especially my 11-year old daughter so that she'll have the real reason for Memorial Day ingrained on her psyche.

Next, Chris, might we move to return Veterans' Day to the Veterans?

Teachers and unuion workers get the day off. We vets take "PTO" or a vacation day.

Sad state of affairs here, isn't it?

AMEN on the fact that I have seen way more veterans WORKING on Veteran's day while the civvies head to the beach or get drunk at BBQs in the backyard and such.

I know, I am one of those business owning veterans who rarely get to take the day off.

But don't question their patriotism.
