The ever paranoid Alternet on the top ten signs of the impending US police state. Couldn’t find one of the ten that was particularly convincing.
The Alternet website, by the way, strongly advocates Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro. Just sayin’…

6. Signing Statements………..lol.
Do you ever catch “The Colbert Report”? He was pretty funny on these:
On Presidential signing statements: “Adding the word ‘not’ to the end of a sentence negates everything that came before it. A signing statement is the presidential equivalent. Now, the president uses more formal language, like ‘I don’t think the constitution protects certain kinds of prisoners.’ (The arrested kind.)This way, the President can make sure a law is applied the way the founders intended. Specifically, the founders of the Bush administration.”
Hey! I kept following the links in this story and the “secret detention facilites” story is actually a good thing. It’s about the government taking solid steps to deal with illegal immigration.
“The contract, which is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary detention and processing capabilities to expand existing ICE Detention and Removal Operations Program facilities in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S.”
I think that’s great!
The touch screen voting machines scare the bejeezus out me. I work in IT for a living. I know how to design systems and more importantly, audit trails for those systems. (my company if very, very interested in where its money goes)
The general situation where these machines cannot produce an audit trail ought to scare everybody.
This isn’t really a left/right issue as those machines can be abused by both sides.
Well, the “Free Speach Zone” one is real. Someone was arrested and charged in SC during the 2004 campaign for carrying a protest sign at a Bush event because he wasn’t in the Free Speech Zone.
Of course one item has already been deleted (courtesy of #1). The government’s cornering the market on tinfoil, so you can’t use it to block out mind control rays.
