America the Beautiful

By Charlie

Afton Mountain

I spent some time this weekend in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and getting away from the bustle and congestion of Northern Virginia. While I was there, I took some time to reflect. Being surrounded by the majesty of nature, the enormity of the terrain, and the sheer peacefulness of the area, I arrived at a simple conclusion: America is a great place, and I’m lucky –or blessed- to live here and be a part of it.

A lot of times, it’s easy to take for granted some of the things that Americans see as the status quo. Having been to a couple third world garden spots, here are some of the things to be thankful for:

In America, no one will burn down your house because you are of a different ethnicity.

In America, armed gangs of young men don’t patrol the streets using violence as they see fit.

In America, you can worship any god you want to, and no one will try to kill you for doing it.

Say what you will about this country, heap blame on it for what you think its indiscretions have been, but ask yourself: what other country has done so much for so many, and asked for so little in return? Ask a follow-up question: where else would you rather live? Some of the most basic things that plague the rest of the world: social, political, and economic strife, are transcended by this great nation.

So, this post is a simplistic message to everyone: Happy Memorial Day. Remember those that fight for us, and remember the land they fight for.

I was born in another country where you could say that all those things are true.

But they're true there because of America.

Sometimes simple is best.
