Why is it that some people think that the Brits can't be tough guys? Is it the accent? If you've ever met any Royal Marines you know that those guys are tough.
Welcome to my Sunday morning Stand To where I make the rounds, checking on the perimeter and the soldiers standing duty (read: surf my blogroll catching up on some of my favorite blogs).

God bless the Royal Marines. Whoever didn't get a woody over watching them storm the beach from the Zodiac boats should probably get off the computer and go watch some HGTV.The males that the brits export to my tv screen on that channel would definately make cindy shebitch and everyone in the ten percent society feel randy.
The sad fact is that the Brits, God bless 'em, are the closest thing to a european military force there is but they are (in no way is this observation intended as an insult..quality is not a problem here) not even a pimple on the rear end of a globally credible military force. Whether the UK can project force depends on "what the meaning of project is". Their support and consequent sacrifice in blood and treasure are deeply respected and appreciated but, unfortunately, are symbolic rather than substantial. Even that would be denied us if a significant plurality of the English had their way. In reality, the UK and the rest of europe are, militariy, almost impotent. They seem neither capable nor willing to consistently respond to the clear and present danger with military force when necessary. The United States can't depend on europe. Too bad.

Please expand on this clear and present danger in Iraq, the one that existed before the war! If I remember correctly it never existed.
Most of the press and people in Briton believe the American adventure in Iraq is a huge mess and massive embarrassment to our armed forces and waste of money. For along time now people have been writing here about "the death of neo-conservatism".
We may be much smaller than we were when we used to rule the world and run a few colonies here and there…. 9-) but as has been said, unless there is the political will no matter how well trained or effective we are then we cannot fulfill the mission.
PS Southern Iraq is NOT under Iranian control; there are some areas where Sadr and his Mahdi Army think they run the show but time and time again they have fled when the Brits roll up. Don't forget the picture you are getting is via the mass media who never seem to show the good stuff for some reason.
We lost the 104th soldier killed in Iraq today. (Lt Richard Palmer of the Royal Scots Dragoons Guards tank regiment) Not as many as the Americans but since we only have 7500 out there the proportionate figure is bad.
The Brits ARe ponying up for a real carrier. Two, in fact, at about 65,000t each. The designation is CVF, and the class name is the Queen Elizabeth Class.
yes, and after getting screwed by the US one time too many, they'll be flying rafales off it.
The Brits rock! The only place you can get a taste of pork is on the helo deck of one of their frigates. The HMS Somerset in the NAG provided the best hospitality I experienced in the Gulf.
I happen to be a huge fan of the RAF Regiment. I wish our Air Force had an outfit like them. Damned good troops, and fine people too. They used to ge the biggest chukle out of us using MPs outside the wire and infantry in the guard towers… "so, you send a policeman OFF the base to deal with trouble, and your infantry stay there…" Heh.
That video in fact features the ENTIRE Brit armed forces (less a couple of guys in furry hats outside Buck palace.
The two QE class carriers will never see salt water, going the way of the TSR2, the EM2 rifle and the Dodo as the Marxist/Socialist government steadily goes bankrupt. And the RM has to 'storm the beach from the Zodiac boats' because they cannot afford to use that fine British invention, the LCAC Hovercraft!
PS Southern Iraq is about as much under British Army control as Northern Ireland…..

It's the tea. Something about drinking tea.
LOL ;)
"Why is it that some people think that the Brits can't be tough guys?"
It's funny you should say that because we Brits often think we're tougher than Americans!
Sure the Brits are right up there with our Military. Except that their Military is run by the civilian government, which is a bad thing.
Take for example, southern Iraq. Because of the lack of British intervention and use of military force, it is now an annex of Iran.
This is not due to their Soldiers lack of ability, but to their abilities being held back by British policies and British politicans.
Despite repeated urgings of the U.S. Military, the Brits have let Iran have southern Iraq.
Of course, who do you think will have to fix that?
Papa Ray
West Texas
USA
It's sad really – 5 Sottish Regts gone, replaced by the Royal Scottish Regt.
The RN's Indian Ocean Squadron will be down to *A* frigate..
16 subs (SSN and SSBN)
3 CVs & 1 Helo CV
30 DDGs & FFGs
The RAF seems to have been gutted less, and 617 Sq. is still around, thank goodness.
It saddens me, really. I'm a big anglophile. I wonder what Nelson, Jellicoe, Montgomery, Harris, and Ramsay would say.
What's the name of the song with this video?
The Brits are great, and I want them on the flanks in a fight, but…when Gordon Browne becomes PM, all bets are off.
What would give you that crazy idea Hugo? ;)
Anyone that knows anything about modern warefare knows the Brits can project force.
And yes Thank god they are not like the French.

You think Europe can't put up a fight? I think you're wrong there. What about the Germans, the French? (to name only a few)
They just want to avoid the fighting, that's all.
I agree with Pjay.
