The Navy Gets in on the Action

By Charlie

Under the watchful tutelage of Army drill sergeants, Sailors practice combat tactics at the Individual Augmentee Combat Training course at Fort Jackson, S.C. Many of these Sailors will deploy to Iraq or Afghanistan. This photo appeared on www.army.mil.

Couple this with the Navy’s establishment of Riverine “Brown Water” forces, and it looks like the Navy is leveraging its historical role to become a more participatory force in the war on terror. This is where they are headed:

Key directives call for establishing expeditionary and riverine warfare units with the Navy.
Specifically, Clark has ordered creation of:

• An active component riverine warfare force by 2006 and two reserve component riverine units by 2007.
• A Navy Expeditionary Combat Battalion by 2007. How such a unit would differ from U.S. Marines is unclear.
• A provisional civil affairs battalion attached to Seabees in 2006 and a reserve civil affairs battalion by 2007.
• An active/reserve integrated structure for two Helo Combat Support Special Squadrons, HCS 4 (Red Wolves) and HCS 5 (Firehawks).
• A unit that will be able to “data-mine” information culled from the National Maritime Intelligence Center, which tracks information on global ship traffic.
• A team to exploit intelligence gathered from maritime interdictions.
• A community of Foreign Area Officers who are experts in specific regions of the world, similar to Army and Marine Corps FAOs.

Are my eyes old or are those sailors wearing blue helmets?

We didn't have those when I was in the Navy.

Army Drill Sergeants? Why go to the Army when you've got your own amphibious assault corps as part of your organization? Any clue as to why Marines aren't training these guys?

Stefan - most Marines are pretty busy. Maybe too busy to train squids to do Marine tasks.

I know a couple of the chiefs who are integrating the HCS squadrons... The missions have changed for the helo boys. In addition, the training for naval aircrew will be more focused, one side for non-combat, the other for combat.

Considering that point a to point b travel via open ocean transport aboard any merchant vessels is much more clandestine than airports, etc. the volume of bad guys making their way from just outside customs via small craft makes sense... Not to mention the massive shipping traffic within the Arabian Gulf.

I go to navy boot camp in may. My job rating is a Boatswain's mate. How can I become a ECG(expeditionary combat battalion) or a Riverine?
