The “Blessed Path”

By Charlie

This is real. Here is an AFP report that shows us the true challenge of our times:

The Islamic republic's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, … used a pro-Palestinian conference in Tehran to rally support from Islamic nations for the cash-strapped, Hamas-led Palestinian government: [edited for continuity- ed.]

"The Zionist regime is an injustice and by its very nature a permanent threat," firebrand President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told the gathering of regime officials, visiting Palestinian militant leaders and foreign sympathizers.

"Whether you like it or not, the Zionist regime is on the road to being eliminated,"

"If there is serious doubt over the Holocaust, there is no doubt over the catastrophe and Holocaust being faced by the Palestinians,"

"I tell the governments who support Zionism to ... let the migrants (Jews) return to their countries of origin. If you think you owe them something, give them some of your land,"

"The plots by the American government against Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon aimed at governing the Middle East with the control of the Zionist regime will not succeed,"

"If, by accident, the American government saw reason, it would respect the wish of the Iraqi people to form its government, respect the Palestinian government, free the prisoners of Guantanamo and Abu Graib, cease the conspiracy (and) not create tension in the Persian Gulf region,"

"The Islamic world cannot remain indifferent and silent to tyranny," he asserted.

"Your martyrs are our martyrs. Your pain is our pain," he said of the Palestinians. "Islamic nations have the duty to help you in every possible way, and help you along this blessed path."

“President” Ahmadenijad isn’t the only one in Iran saying these things, Khamenei is too. This is the rhetoric of an entire dangerous theocratic regime, and it needs to be taken very seriously.

Funny. Considering all the Arab land that is essentially empty space, this is laffable. Why not move the Palestinians out of there to, say, 40 times the space avaialable just south in Egypt? Or west in Saudi Arabia? Iran? I'm sure Western Iraq has plenty of space for some Palestinians.

If I recall correctly, Iran gave no money to the Palestinians during their non-violent uprising, the intifada, against the Israelis, wherein the Palestinians, comprising most of the grunt work force for Israeli businesses, would refuse to go to work. Two weeks of that and Israel would be forced (according to Tom Friedman, anyway) to come to some sort of agreement. But the only money came from, ironically enough, the US.

I think people need to see that there's a real distinction between loving Palestinians and hating Israelis, and that the latter cannot be exchanged for the former.

That "blessed path" that he referred to was the path of martyrdom.

You see to them, if all the Palestinians died in a nuclear blast, set off to wipe out the Israelis, THEN THEY ALL WOULD DIE MARTYRS, and enjoy the rewards reserved for the martyrs.

That's why all the people who make the otherwise sane observation that a nuke set off in Israel is going to carry off a ton of Palestinians, just don't get it. For a muslim, the Palestinians SHOULD BE AS HAPPY ABOUT THE THOUGHT OF DYING, as they should be overjoyed about the liquidation of the Jews.

They're whacked out. They're absolutely whacked out.

Our nightmare is ultimately whether to take care of this or let Israel do it. Make no mistake, if we don't (with or without a coalition), THEY WILL; it is their existence that is at stake. I don't mean they'll necessarily be successful but they can't not try. Will we let them? Iran wants nothing more than to put us in the position of having to decide.

I don't see any good outcome, unless (as with Iraq) this is largely or somewhat braggadoccio. So far it seems not to be.

I think that there are some Israelis who have what it takes to order the destruction of those nuclear facilities, such as Netanyahu. But I don't think Olmert has what it takes. Not at all. He was very content to wander around the edge of the Likud circle. But now he's in the big chair, and I don't think he has it. The fact that Netanyahu looks to be outside of his new government bodes ill in my opion, for the likelihood of the Israelis moving on those facilities.

Moreover, I think there are entirely too many people FAR TOO CONFIDENT, AND RELIANT upon the Israelis taking out those facilities.

I don't think that is wise, nor do I like the drift of thought that such an attitude betrays.

If it is to be done, it should be done by us.

In fact, IT SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN DONE, YEARS AGO. Within MONTHS of 9/11, those facilities should have been turned to dust.

I don't know what the hell is holding up GW.

There is NOTHING that he will learn in the remaining months of his Presidency about that program, that he doesn't already know now. There is nothing about the UN that will come to light, that will lead him to conclude they are capable and ready of handling the problem.

He's procrastinating, he's wussin' out.

In short, he's lost his nerve.
