Dispatch the Whaaambulance to West Point, ASAP!

I saw this, and had to bring some mandatory 'Point abuse to everyone.

Cadets Vent at West Point After Drug Searches

At least 1,000 West Point cadets demonstrated last week against the manner in which a drug search was carried out in their barracks, shouting and throwing fireworks and other objects from their windows, according to accounts of the incident.

"Hundreds of cadets were hollering obscenities out of their windows and some were throwing objects," according to an incident summary obtained by the Times Herald-Record of Orange County, N.Y., which ran an article about the incident yesterday.

"A team-size element of firemen responded to the scene as cadets were throwing objects that were on fire out of the windows in Bradley Barracks," the incident report said. One cadet was reportedly hit with a jar of peanut butter but was not hurt.

The incident report also stated that "about 2,000 cadets were involved and witness to this travesty," according to the newspaper.

But Lt. Col. Kent P. Cassella, a spokesman for West Point, said that the report was "an over-dramatization" of what happened, and said it overstated the number of those involved. He said he had been told that no more than 1,000 students were involved. The student body consists of 4,000 cadets.

The officer's report called the incident a riot, but Cassella disputed that characterization. "The term 'riot' is going a little too far," he said. "They blew off steam." He said he did not know the name or rank of the officer who wrote the report.

Folks, let me tell you about a real military college. Despite the pretty PC website, this little spot of hell on earth is preparing to disgourge another batch of steely-eyed, barrel-chested freedom fighters into the breach of America's relentless war against evil and tyranny. We welcomed the random drug inspections at VMI, because they gave us a break from the relentless monotony of PT and patrolling exercises with some college coursework tacked on to it! Plus, its almost graduation time, the summer uniforms are broken out, and suntanning is allowed! This was one of the few good times to be a cadet. So in the words of Ah-nold:

Stop Whining!

What a bunch of nancies. Not that the Naval Academy is any better, those kids aren't remotely equipped to handle real life. They make a big show of being the hardest of hard core; and when they meet real life challenges they fold like a bad poker hand.

Random drug screening? Boo-hoo! Once you earn your commission, it's a momentary distraction and then back to keeping the world safe for democracy. These pansies should all be ashamed of themselves.

Perhaps all of those who joined in the merrymaking could be assisted with letters of recommendation to...say...Yale? The open spots at the academy could be filled with more focused people.

Wow... After going through basic, and now in ROTC, I'm kind of scared to see the future of the officers of this country.

VMI eh? I guess any place that had Stonewall teaching at it would know how to make them tough..... ;-)

(Actually, my ancestors fought for the union... they just didn't do it very well!).

I the bad old days (late 80s) when I was in (US Army)flight school, they occasionally would awaken us at O' Dark 30 and run the dogs through the barracks looking for contraband items. Additionally, it wasn't uncommon to have a wiz quiz before PT in the morning on a regular basis.

If even only remotely true these folks need a kick in the ass.

My son is headed to VMI in August (his first choice for college). He met two other prospective students along the way who viewed VMI as a backup option to West Point. Too bad, sounds to me like those boys could haved learned a lot from a real military college.

I've met a few good WP officers; one of our LTs is a WPer.

I hope their instructors took note and don't send those whiners to be 11 or 19 series...

Roger your last, Charlie! Those clowns at the Boys and Girls School on the Hudson seem to think that they are members of some exclusive club and that the rules don't apply to them. Some of them will eventually learn that leadership by example will serve tham far, far better in inspiring troops than knocking their rings on the table.

I've found that some of the very best officers I've known were graduates of the Institute.

Marine6 - Out

That's bullshit. You don't know the situation. Some whiny officer (not a West Point grad) blew a situation way out of proportion. This is no reason to start bashing West Point. All of us here are used to random drug searches, it was the way the administration handled the drug search. Plus, I've heard about the riots at VMI. Don't act like your cadets are shit hot.

By the way, VMI does not hold a candle to West Point. In every measurable category, USMA is a better school than VMI.

DMO   ·  April 29, 2006 09:49 PM

I can't recall any situation where VMI cadets rioted.

There have been "step offs," where the corps suspends military regulations in barracks as a form of organized protest.

West Point is a great school, no doubt. This incident however, does not reflect well on your corps.

You will find that when you get into the active service, West Pointers do suffer from a bit of an elitist stigma, as Marine 6 said. Lines like "VMI does not hold a candle to West Point. In every measurable category, USMA is a better school than VMI" encourage -rather than discourage' that stigma.

Just some things to keep in mind, cadet.
